Some Features Of The Three Types Of Poodle
Standard Poodles
It may seem unusual for most people, but the dogs of the standard type of poodles can grow up to be quite large when they are adults. According to the standards of the American Kennel Club (AKC), the poodle dogs of the standard type should measure at least fifteen inches in the height of their shoulder, but many of them stand twenty inches or taller.
Standard poodles are lovely dogs. They are as intelligent, friendly, proud, and fiercely loyal companions as the poodle dogs of all other types. Unfortunately, the poodle dogs of the standard type carry some heavy genetic burdens. The standard variety of the poodle dogs differ of the smaller Poodle types not only through their larger size but also through their shorter average life span, that is only twelve years. Around 40% of standard poodles die as the result of some type of cancer, although there is no clear trend as to any one type that especially affects this breed.
There is also a high probability for the puppies of the standard type of poodles to be born with the Addison’s disease, a hormonal disorder which, if untreated, can lead to cardiac arrest and death. The dogs of the standard type of poodle are also susceptible to hip dysplasia, as other breeds of large size dogs are too.
Miniature Poodles
According to AKC standards, miniature poodles stand taller than ten inches at the shoulder, but no taller than fifteen inches
The miniature poodles don’t need large yards to play in, so they are suitable for apartment dwellers. They use to bark at strangers, making good watchdogs.
The miniature poodles are sociable dogs, they go along well with humans of all ages and with other breeds of dogs. They live more than the standard poodles, their average life span beeing aroud fifteen years. Unfortunately, they also are susceptible of genetic related diseases, like problems with their knees, an eye disease that can lead to blindness and the seizure disorder.
The Poodle Dogs Of The Toy Type
The smallest of the poodle breeds, toy poodles stand ten inches tall or less at the shoulder. There are even smaller varieties, such as the so called tea cup poodle. If they benefit of good care, the toy type of the poodle dogs may live up to eighteen years, longer than all Poodle types.
Poodle Coats
Poodles can have two types of coats. Most of the poodle dogs have curly coats, preffered for the show dogs.
Poodle coats can also be corded, which produces a look not unlike dreadlocks on humans. Not many poodles having corded coats are known in the United States.
Poodle Colors
The most common colors for poodles are black or white, but poodles exist in almost any color you can imagine including brown, the Apricot Poodle, silver, beige, cream, blue, and even a Red Poodle. According to the American Kennel Club show regulations, poodles must have uniform colored coats.
Poodles are a large variety of intelligent and friendly dogs, having different sizes and colors. You have many choices to look for the best poodle for you.
